Military ceremony kicks off celebration
KUALA LUMPUR: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail attended the trooping the colours ceremony in conjunction with his 60th birthday at Dataran Merdeka here yesterday.
The Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tuanku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid, was present.
The ceremony started with a rendition of the song, Hormat di-Raja, by the Malaysian Armed Forces band, followed by a 21-gun salute.

A total of 496 men and 22 officers from the army, navy and air force, led by Lt-Kol Nor Mubarak Mohamed Som, took part in the trooping the colours.
The ceremony ended with a parade and flypast by two Aloutte, two Nuri and one Equirrel helicopters carrying flags of the country and the armed forces.
Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali; Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his wife, Datin Sri Endon Mahmood; cabinet ministers and foreign dignitaries.
City folk and foreign tourists had also gathered at the square since early yesterday morning to witness the ceremony.
After the event, Dr Mahathir, Dr Siti Hasmah, Abdullah and Endon joined the King and Queen at a garden tea party at Istana Negara.
Some 3,000 guests at the party, including members of the foreign diplomatic corps, then witnessed the cutting of the birthday cake by the King, who is also the Raja of Perlis. –Bernama
