Aussie zoo gets Malayan sun bear

MELBOURNE: Australia's Foreign Minister Alexander Downer opened an enclosure containing a Malayan Sun Bear and a Sumatran Tiger at Canberra Zoo yesterday.

Downer, who was accompanied by Acting Malaysian High Commissioner in Canberra Abdul Malek Abdul Aziz and Indonesian charge d'affaires Imran Contan, said it was important to work with the two countries on a variety of issues.

“One of the areas where we can increase co-operation is our environmental management in the region,” he said.

Saying that the Sumatran Tiger and the Malayan Sun or Honey Bear were endangered species, Downer added that more effort should be undertaken to protect their habitats from degrading.

Malek said it was good to have the Malayan Sun Bear on show at the Canberra Zoo.

“This particular bear was born in New Zealand, but I am not sure what can be done to find it a mate,” he said. – Bernama
