Foreign Husbands With Qualifications Can Stay
PETALING JAYA, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- Foreign husbands of Malaysians who have high qualifications and skills in certain fields can now reside in the country on a year to year basis until they find employment.
The regulation would take effect on Sept 1, Home Minister Secretary-General Datuk Aseh Che Mat said on Wednesday.
The decision was made in view that currently there was no policy on the period that foreigners who married local women were allowed to reside in the country, he told a media conference here.
Last Saturday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who is also Home Minister, announced the abolition of tight immigration rules that are biased against Malaysian women married to foreigners.
Aseh said only those with high qualifications and skills in fields like information technology would be given the expatriate pass or professional pass to enable them to stay longer in the country.
He said foreign labourers who come here to work would be given temporary visit passes and the regulation prohibiting them from marrying was still in force.
If they breached this condition, their work permits would be revoked and no exemption would be given.
Aseh said foreign women married to local men were normally given social visit passes on a year to year basis for five years after which they could apply for permanent resident (PR) status. -- BERNAMA
