KUALA LUMPUR April 18 - The Malaysian-based UCMAS Academy of Mental Arithmetic's success at world level is another proof of the "Malaysia Boleh!" spirit, Deputy Information Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai said Sunday.
Lim said he was happy that the academy had put a lot of effort in promoting the `Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System' (UCMAS) to children worldwide.
"I was informed that the academy has successfully set up franchising systems with more than 1,000 franchisees and 5,000 course instructors in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mauritius, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Oman, Jordan, Canada, United Kingdom, United States and China.
"UCMAS was also awarded the prestigious ISO Quality Management System Certificate by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service," he said when opening the graduation ceremony for 34 advanced-level and 26 Grand-Level students here.
"I believe that practising the abacus and mental arithmetics is both important and helpful towards the brain development of young children and their ability to concentrate," he said.
Meanwhile, academy chairman Ismail Mohd Yunos said the institute, which was currently the largest such academy in the world, had opened branches in more than 23 countries.
The UCMAS Education Corporation Sdn Bhd director said the growing number of participating countries suggested that the UCMAS concept was able to be accepted worldwide.
Speaking to the media later, Lim said the Information Ministry was prepared to work with the Education Ministry to air educational programmes like UCMAS on Radio Televisyen Malaysia.
"We are always open. If the Education Ministry says it is something good that we should air, we are prepared to work together with them. However, the initiative should be from the company to approach the Education Ministry, and then come back to us," he said.
