KEPALA BATAS, Feb 2 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi returned to his ancestral home, here Monday night following the death of his mother.
His mother, Datuk Kailan Hassan died at 5.05pm. She was 79 years old.
Abdullah arrived here at 8.35pm from Kuala Lumpur. He was met on arrival by Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Hilmi Yahaya and Penang State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Yahaya Abdul Hamid.
Kailan is expected to be buried at 3.30pm, Tuesday.
Abdullah's cousin, Datuk Subky Raof said she would be buried next to her husband, the late Datuk Ahmad Badawi Fahim, at the Masjid Jamiul Badawi here.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail is expected to call on the family at 3pm Tuesday, he said.
On arriving at the house, Abdullah, who looked sad but calm, went straight to the remains of his mother and then raised both hands in prayers.
His wife, Datin Seri Endon Mahmood, who is overseas, is expected to arrive tomorrow.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Zainal Abidin Zin was among hundreds of people who came to express their condolences to the family upon hearing the news of her death.
Among those who turned up tonight to express their condolences to the family were State Secretary Datuk Khalid Ramli and several VIPs from Kedah including State Executive Councillor Prof Datuk Dr Othman Ishak.
By late Monday night, people continued to stream into the house which is located in Jalan Perak.
They came from as far as Kedah and Perak to pay their last respects.
