Malaysia enters record books for making the world's tallest pastry

KUALA LUMPUR : Although Malaysia no long boasts the tallest building in the world, it can lay claim to what's possibly the tallest pastry around the globe.
It is called Roti Tissue, a cone-shaped pastry that stretches over one metre tall and it is a hot favourite among locals in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.
Inspired by the Petronas Twin Towers, the seller's father invented the dessert as a gimmick.
He made the pastry three times the usual size, and it became an instant hit!
Buruhan Muhamad, Proprietor, Kayu Nasi Kandar Restaurant, said: "Normally everybody does the small ones, we came up with something new to attract customers lah."
Roti tissue costs less than one US dollar a piece, and is available only in the evenings.
It has become a must-have dessert for customers there.
"Delicious," said one customer.
"It's big, very cheap," said another.
It is very light and crispy, a little sweet because of the sugar and condensed milk but the best thing is you can share the calories around among your friends.
It takes quite a bit of skill to make Roti Tissue.
First, the dough is stretched and placed on a sizzling hotplate, then margarine, sugar, and eggs are added and when the pastry is cooked to a golden brown, you need to roll it into a cone in one swift action.
Then toss sugar and condensed milk over the concoction, and you have what's possibly the world's tallest pastry!
So even though Malaysia no longer boasts of the tallest building in the world, it could well lay claim to another entry in the record books. - CNA
